The first level of words is those that come up very often,
such as look and run, that do not need to be taught. The next group is words
that come up pretty frequently but may need to be taught. The last group is
words that are technical and relate to a specific structure such as chemistry
or biology. These words can be drawn from a text that the students are dealing
with at the time, not necessarily outside words.
To teach “chunking” have students read words from a strip of
paper. First they should tear off the front and the back and read the middle.
Then they can continue to add on to the word until they read the whole thing.
Then they can do the same thing with using their thumbs. After a while they
will just be able to do this strategy on their own, in their mind. This should
be done whenever they read.
Word study can be fostered by teacher modeling and
encouraging more reading. By giving students opportunities to hear someone read
and to read themselves, they will learn the best way, with practice!
