Video Reflection
It’s amazing how the teacher gets every student to feel
special and welcome in her classroom. This is an important tool to ensure that
students are comfortable in their environment because only them can students
maximize their learning as they are not afraid of making mistakes and trying
again. I’m amazed at the ingenious way she engages student from all backgrounds
buy singing the good morning song in Spanish too, this, I’m sure, gives them a
sense of security and familiarity. Also, she asks them how they’re doing also
in their native tongue.
Her method of teaching is one of gradual release of responsibility. This
ensures that students full grasp what is expected of them and have a concrete
background before forging on their own. When she models reading she makes sure
to pick a book that will engage their interest and inspire discussions. Then,
she pulls back a little and they read together. As they go on, the teacher
gives them even more room to continue on their own as they read themselves but
with her guidance and prompts when needed. Last, goes independent reading where
they read on their own without the teacher’s involvement. By writing too, the
teacher first has them write collaboratively and then on their own.
I think this video is a wonderful example of how we should
all be teaching. First of all, to create a safe learning environment to that
the students are willing and comfortable to learn. And then to let them venture
out on their own once they have a solid foundation. This teacher also made a
valid point which I think every teacher must keep in mind. We don’t teach so
that the students can repeat it back but that they should be able to continue
learning whether or not we are there!
Hi! You raised a great point about that Ms. Owen makes each child feel welcome in her classroom, regardless of his/her background and culture. Many of her students are ELLs or simply not fluent or knowledgeable on the English language. When they walk into a classroom where the main focus and use is the English language, they may feel insecure and not confident. Therefore, when their teacher acknowledges their first language, they feel recognized, and this gives them a feeling of security.
